Video, eh?

16 December 2005

Browsers need mplayer plug-in to play videos (especially Windows Media and Apple Quicktime) from the internet. The plug-in is available from the site http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/download.php. After installing the package Firefox will be able to play the video files. To use this plug-in with Opera I had to do the following -

  • Locate the file mplayerplug-in.so

  • As root, copy it to /usr/lib/opera/plug-ins.

  • Still as root, type ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/libxpcom.so /usr/lib

  • Restart Opera.

  • Verify that the plug-in is working by going to Apple's movie trailer page and watch a trailer.

Totem Movie Player of my Fedora Core 4 system now became able to play at least the .mpg files after I installed gstreamer-ffmpegdownloaded from http://stentz.freshrpms.net.

MPlayer became able to play .wmv files after I downloaded the essential
codecs package
(essential-20050412.tar.bz2) from MPlayer Download page and placed the contents of the directory essential-20050412 (obtained after extracting from the tar) to the directory /usr/lib/codecs
